Karakung Swim Club would like to share an update regarding our parking lot and the ongoing traffic situation at Karakung Field. In the spirit of collaboration, Karakung has reached a short-term agreement with the Township to open Karakung’s parking lot to HTLL members. The agreement will formalize non-swim parking in the lot for the 2024 and 2025 baseball seasons. Additional Township-led discussions with HTLL and Karakung will be scheduled in the coming weeks to confirm HTLL's support and financial participation in this agreement as a vested stakeholder. The Township has agreed to license the lot for non-KSC use and also to assist Karakung Swim Club as we begin a detailed evaluation and subsequent repair of the critical creek bank erosion issue. In an effort to exercise extreme caution and with a focus on overall safety, the parking spaces closest to the creek bank erosion area have been blocked off; no parking will be permitted there.
HTLL members will generally be permitted to use the Karakung lot during baseball practices and games almost exclusively during the spring and fall seasons; however, when the swim club is open (Memorial Day through Labor Day), swim club members will have parking priority. Also, there are select large swim club events during the summer; Karakung will give advanced notice of those events and, on those select days, HTLL will instruct baseball families not to use the swim lot at all. HTLL families are reminded that the prioritized use of parking for games and practices should continue to be the upper paved lot at Karakung Field, the newly installed lower gravel lot at Karakung Field and, finally, the Karakung Swim Club parking lot. All persons using the Karakung parking lot should exercise caution when crossing Karakung Drive.
The Karakung Swim Club Board of Directors is grateful to the Township and to HTLL for coming together to address this complex problem. The agreement assists Karakung in taking the first step towards addressing the Cobb's Creek erosion problem. It also provides all parties time to further evaluate the traffic safety concerns along Karakung Drive and hopefully develop a more comprehensive solution to the issues. The current agreement is short term and completing the work on the creek bank and subsequent parking lot repairs will likely take years. The Karakung Board hopes that this is the first of many collaborations between it, the Township, and HTLL to continue to make our Township better.
